Privacy policy
Last updated: 6 October 2026. Applies to the SeisMeteo app for iPhone and iPad (version 4.0 and later) and to the seismeteo.com website.
In short
- SeisMeteo requires no account and contains no tracking, advertising or third-party analytics.
- The app has no servers of its own: your preferences stay on your device and I receive no data from the app.
- To show you weather, alerts, earthquakes and seismograms, the app connects directly to the services that publish the data. They receive your device's IP address and, for weather and alerts only, rounded coordinates or the name of the municipality.
- I only receive personal data if you write to me.
1. Data controller
The data controller is Cristian Palandrani, an individual and the developer of SeisMeteo.
- Email: support@seismeteo.com
No data protection officer (DPO) has been appointed, as one is not required for this kind of processing.
2. Data that stays on your device
To work, the app stores on your device:
- your preferences: temperature unit, notification settings (on/off, minimum magnitude, "near me" option and radius), the radius used to find seismograms near an event, chart view and sensitivity;
- your favorite cities (up to 5: name, coordinates, time zone and municipality) and favorite seismic stations;
- your last known location, saved only so that the background check can filter "near me" notifications;
- temporary copies (cache) of forecasts, earthquakes and alerts, so they appear faster and when you are offline;
- your SeisMeteo Pro status, verified on the device through the App Store.
This data is not sent to me or to anyone else. It may be included in your device backups (in iCloud or on a computer), depending on your settings and under Apple's management. To delete it, simply delete the app.
3. Location
Location is optional: without it, the app works with the cities you add yourself. If you allow it, the app asks for it only while you are using it, with an accuracy of about one kilometer, and uses it for:
- the weather and alerts where you are;
- the distance to earthquakes and the "near me" filter, calculated on the device;
- "near me" notifications, filtered on the device using your last known location;
- the name of your town and municipality.
The only things that leave the device are:
- to MET Norway and Apple WeatherKit, coordinates rounded to 2 decimal places (about 1 km);
- to Apple (MapKit), the coordinates, to look up the name of the place, the municipality and the time zone;
- to allertameteo.app, the name of the municipality only, and only for places in Italy.
Your location is never sent to the earthquake or seismogram sources. You can change or revoke the permission at any time in iOS Settings > SeisMeteo > Location.
4. Services the app contacts
When you open a screen, the app downloads the data directly from the service that publishes it. Like any internet connection, each request discloses the device's IP address, the time and technical information such as the app and iOS versions. Each service handles this data as an independent controller, under its own privacy policy. I receive none of it.
| Service | Purpose | What it receives besides the IP address |
|---|---|---|
| MET Norway (Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Norway) | Weather forecasts | Rounded coordinates: 2 decimal places for your current location (about 1 km), 4 for saved cities (about 10 m). The app's name and version with the contact support@seismeteo.com, not your data. MET states that it keeps the IP address together with the requested coordinates in its logs, in its own data center in Oslo (MET terms). |
| Apple WeatherKit | Official weather alerts | Rounded coordinates of the place shown. |
| Apple MapKit (Apple Maps) | Maps, city search, place names | What you type in the city search, the coordinates to turn into a place name, the map areas displayed. |
| allertameteo.app | Civil Protection alerts for places in Italy | The name of the municipality, included in the request address. It is an independent service that republishes the bulletins of the Italian Civil Protection Department. |
| USGS (United States), EMSC-CSEM (France), INGV (Italy) | Earthquake lists, including for the widget. For notifications, the periodic background check only queries USGS. | The search parameters (time range, magnitude). No location. |
| EarthScope (United States), GEOFON-GFZ (Germany), Epos-France/RESIF (France), INGV (Italy), SED-ETH Zurich (Switzerland), BGR (Germany), NCEDC and SCEDC (United States), BGS (United Kingdom), NOA (Greece), GeoNet (New Zealand), USGS and AVO (United States) | Seismograms and station data | The station code and the requested time range. No location. |
| Apple App Store | Buying and restoring SeisMeteo Pro, recognizing buyers of the old paid app, asking for a review | These are handled by Apple with your Apple Account. I do not receive your name, email or payment details: the app verifies the purchase on the device. |
External links in the app (for example an earthquake's page on USGS, EMSC or INGV, or the details of an alert) open in your browser and are governed by those websites' policies. Apple's services are covered by Apple's privacy policy.
5. Notifications
Earthquake notifications are local: the app creates them on the device. There is no notification server and no device identifier is sent to me. When iOS allows it, the app downloads the list of recent earthquakes from USGS and compares magnitude and distance with your settings on the device.
6. Data I receive
- Support emails. If you write to support@seismeteo.com, I receive your email address, your message and any attachments, and use them only to reply to you. Messages pass through Cloudflare Email Routing, which forwards them to my mailbox at Gmail, Google's email service.
- Statistics provided by Apple. If you chose in iOS settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple gives me aggregated statistics and crash reports for the app, which do not identify you. App Store Connect also shows me aggregated download and sales figures.
I receive no other data.
7. The seismeteo.com website
The website is hosted by Cloudflare. To deliver the pages and protect them from attacks, Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP address, browser type, pages requested and time, as a processor under its Data Processing Addendum (Cloudflare privacy policy).
The website uses no cookies of its own and no analytics, and loads no third-party scripts or fonts. Its only script is a file of the website itself that animates the home page: it collects no data and stores nothing on your device. Cloudflare may set technical cookies that are strictly necessary for security and do not require consent.
The only third-party content is the "Download on the App Store" badge on the home page, which your browser loads from Apple's servers (toolbox.marketingtools.apple.com). As with any external image, Apple receives your IP address, technical information about your browser and the name of the website the request comes from, and handles them under its own privacy policy. The badge link opens the app's page on the App Store.
8. Legal bases
- Running the app and requesting data from the services: necessary to provide the service you ask for by using the app (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR). Storing data on the device is strictly necessary for this purpose. Location and notifications require your permission in iOS settings, which you can revoke at any time.
- Support emails: replying to your requests (Article 6(1)(b)) and legitimate interest in providing support (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Website: legitimate interest in running the website reliably and securely (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Legal obligations, such as tax obligations, where applicable (Article 6(1)(c)).
9. Transfers outside the European Union
Some sources are outside the European Economic Area: the United States (USGS, EarthScope, NCEDC, SCEDC, AVO), Switzerland (SED-ETH Zurich), the United Kingdom (BGS) and New Zealand (GeoNet). Requests go directly from your device when you open content from these sources and contain only the IP address and the request parameters.
- For Switzerland, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, the European Commission has adopted adequacy decisions.
- For the U.S. scientific institutions, the transmission is necessary to provide the content you asked for (Article 49(1)(b) GDPR).
- Apple, Cloudflare and Google (for the Gmail mailbox that receives support emails) may also process data outside the European Union. In that case the safeguards described in their privacy policies apply, and for Cloudflare also its Data Processing Addendum.
MET Norway is located in Norway, which is part of the European Economic Area.
10. How long data is kept
- Data on your device: until you delete the app or the data. Temporary copies are replaced at the next update, and iOS may delete them when it needs space.
- Support emails: for as long as needed to handle your request, and then for no more than 24 months after the last message, unless the law requires otherwise.
- Third-party services and Cloudflare: according to their own policies.
11. Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and portability, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest (Articles 15–22 GDPR). Write to support@seismeteo.com: I will reply within one month.
Since the app sends me no data, the only data I can look up is in the emails you have sent me. For data logged by the services listed above, you can contact them directly.
If you believe the processing breaches the GDPR, you can lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (Piazza Venezia 11, 00187 Rome, Italy, www.garanteprivacy.it), or with the supervisory authority of the EU country where you live or work.
12. Children
SeisMeteo is not specifically aimed at children and collects no data from its users. If you are a parent and believe a child under 14 has written to me, contact me and I will delete the message.
13. Security
The app communicates with data services only over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and handles no passwords or payment details.
14. Changes
If the app or the services it uses change, I will update this policy and the date at the top of the page. Significant changes will also be announced in the app.
15. Contact
